Frequently asked questions
- Do I need the landlord PAN on a rent receipt?
- For HRA claims in India, employers usually ask for the landlord PAN when annual rent is more than 1,00,000 rupees. Below that, the PAN is optional. This tool keeps the PAN field optional so it works either way. Everything is generated in your browser, so no details are uploaded anywhere.
- How much HRA is tax-exempt in India?
- The HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is the lowest of three values: the actual HRA received from your employer, rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, or 50% of basic salary if you live in a metro city (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) or 40% for other cities. Submitting valid rent receipts to your employer is how you claim this exemption.
- Can I print all 12 monthly receipts at once?
- Yes. Set the Number of months to 12, choose the start month as April to cover the full Indian financial year from April to March, then click Print. Your browser will show a print dialog where you can save all receipts to a single PDF or print them on paper.
- What payment mode should I select on the receipt?
- Choose the mode that matches how you actually paid the rent: bank transfer, UPI, cheque, or cash. For HRA claims, non-cash payment modes such as bank transfer or UPI are generally preferred because they create a transaction trail. Cash payments above Rs 1 lakh per year are not eligible for HRA exemption under the Income Tax Act.
