Frequently asked questions

When do I charge CGST and SGST instead of IGST?
For an intra-state supply, where the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, you charge CGST and SGST, each at half the GST rate. For an inter-state supply, across state lines, you charge a single IGST at the full rate. The tool never applies both at once; pick intra or inter-state and it splits the tax correctly.
Is a GSTIN mandatory for both supplier and recipient?
The supplier GSTIN is mandatory on a valid GST tax invoice because it identifies the registered taxpayer. The recipient GSTIN is required only if the recipient is a registered business and wants to claim input tax credit. For supplies to unregistered consumers you may leave the recipient GSTIN blank, though the invoice is then a B2C invoice rather than a B2B invoice.
What GST rates apply to services versus goods?
Services are taxed at 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% depending on the HSN/SAC classification. Most professional and IT services fall under 18%. Some essential services such as healthcare and education are exempt at 0%. Goods follow a similar slab structure but the applicable rate depends on the specific HSN chapter heading, so always confirm with the official GST rate schedule for your product.
How do I add the HSN code for my product or service?
The Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) code classifies goods, while the Services Accounting Code (SAC) classifies services. You can look up the correct code from the CBIC GST portal or your GST registration documents. Businesses with turnover below 5 crore rupees in the previous financial year need to provide a 4-digit code; those above 5 crore must use a 6-digit code.
