Frequently asked questions

Which US states have no income tax?
Nine: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. New Hampshire and Washington tax investment or capital-gains income but not wages.
Which states have a flat tax?
States including Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Utah use a single flat rate. Each state's rate differs (PA 3.07%, IL 4.95%, CO 4.4%, MA 5%, NC 4.25%, etc.).
How does state tax interact with federal?
Most states conform to federal AGI (adjusted gross income), then apply state-specific deductions/exemptions and brackets. A few states (NJ, PA, AL, MA) have non-conforming rules, they may tax things federal doesn't (or vice versa).
