Worked example

Take someone who reaches age 65 with S$213,000 in their Retirement Account, which is the Full Retirement Sum benchmark. The FRS is anchored to produce roughly S$1,600 a month on the CPF LIFE Standard plan, so this person’s indicative payout is about S$1,600 a month, or S$19,200 a year, for life. Because the estimate scales linearly from that anchor, someone with S$300,000 in their RA would see roughly S$2,254 a month, while the Basic Retirement Sum of S$106,500 would give close to S$800 a month.

This is an indicative figure only. The actual CPF LIFE payout depends on your plan (Standard, Basic, or Escalating), your precise RA balance, your age, and the prevailing annuity factors CPF uses, which are not a simple straight line. For a binding number, the official CPF LIFE Estimator is the right tool. The value of this estimate is seeing roughly how a higher RA balance, for instance from cash top-ups, translates into more lifelong monthly income.

How it is calculated

The estimate anchors on a known benchmark: the Full Retirement Sum, currently S$213,000, is designed to produce roughly S$1,600 a month on the CPF LIFE Standard plan from age 65. The tool takes your Retirement Account balance, divides it by the FRS, and multiplies by that S$1,600 anchor to scale the payout up or down. Annual income is the monthly figure times twelve. This is a deliberate simplification: real CPF LIFE payouts come from actuarial annuity factors that vary with your plan, age, and balance, and they do not scale in a perfectly straight line. The tool is meant for quick what-if planning, not as a substitute for the official CPF LIFE Estimator, which uses your actual figures.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this estimate?
It is indicative only. CPF LIFE payouts depend on your plan (Standard, Basic, Escalating), your exact Retirement Account balance, age, and prevailing annuity factors. The Full Retirement Sum produces roughly S$1,600 a month from 65 on the Standard plan; use the official CPF LIFE Estimator for your precise figure.
What is the difference between CPF LIFE Standard, Basic, and Escalating plans?
All three plans pay a monthly income for life, but they differ in how the payout is structured. The Standard plan gives the highest level payout throughout retirement and leaves a smaller bequest. The Basic plan pays a lower monthly amount but preserves more of your principal in the Retirement Account for your beneficiaries. The Escalating plan starts with a lower payout than Standard but increases by 2 percent each year, helping offset inflation over a long retirement. As of 2026, Standard is the default for most CPF members who do not make an active choice.
Can I top up my Retirement Account to increase my CPF LIFE payout?
Yes. Under the Retirement Sum Topping-Up Scheme (RSTU), you can top up your own Retirement Account or that of a parent or grandparent using cash or CPF Ordinary Account and Special Account savings, up to the prevailing Enhanced Retirement Sum (currently S$426,000 for 2026). Cash top-ups attract a personal income tax relief of up to S$8,000 per calendar year under IRAS rules. Top-ups made before you turn 55 are credited into the Special Account; after 55 they go directly into the Retirement Account.
When does CPF LIFE payout begin and what happens if I die early?
Payouts begin at your Payout Eligibility Age, which is 65 for members born in 1958 or later. You can choose to defer to age 70, and each year of deferral raises the monthly payout by roughly 6 to 7 percent. If you pass away before cumulative payouts equal your premium (the RA balance used to join the scheme), the shortfall is paid to your estate. Under the Standard plan the bequest is typically smaller than under the Basic plan because more of the premium is used to fund higher monthly income over your lifetime. CPF LIFE is not subject to estate duty, and CPF nomination takes precedence over your will for any residual CPF monies.
