Worked example

Take an hourly rate of $35, working 40 hours a week across all 52 weeks of the year. One week of pay is 35 times 40, which is $1,400. A fortnight is simply two of those weeks, so $2,800. The annual figure is the weekly pay multiplied by 52 weeks, giving $72,800 of gross pay before any deductions.

To get a monthly figure the calculator divides the annual $72,800 by 12, which is about $6,067 a month. Note that the months are not equal to four weeks each, so the monthly number is slightly higher than four weekly pay packets. These are all gross amounts, meaning before PAYE income tax, the ACC earners levy, and any KiwiSaver contribution come out.

How it is calculated

The conversion is pure multiplication. Weekly pay is your hourly rate times the hours you work each week. Fortnightly pay is two weeks of that amount. Annual pay is the weekly figure times the number of weeks you work per year, which defaults to 52 because a salaried role is paid through its annual leave. The monthly figure divides the annual total by 12 calendar months rather than by four weeks, so it captures the extra few days each month. If you work fewer weeks, for example a fixed-term contract of 46 weeks, lower the weeks input and the annual and monthly numbers fall in proportion. Every output here is gross, so use the take-home pay calculator to apply PAYE, ACC, and KiwiSaver.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hourly to annual?
Multiply your hourly rate by hours worked per week, then by the number of weeks you work per year (usually 52, which already includes paid annual leave for salaried-equivalent comparison). The result is gross pay before PAYE, ACC, and KiwiSaver. Use the take-home calculator to see the net figure.
What is the minimum wage in New Zealand for 2025/2026?
The adult minimum wage in New Zealand is $23.15 per hour from 1 April 2025, as set by the New Zealand government and reviewed annually. The starting-out and training minimum wages are $18.52 per hour (80% of the adult rate). Working 40 hours a week at the adult minimum wage gives approximately $48,152 gross per year.
Does KiwiSaver affect my hourly-to-annual calculation?
No. The hourly-to-salary conversion shows gross pay, and KiwiSaver contributions are deducted after gross pay is calculated. Employee contributions are 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% of gross pay, and employer contributions must be at least 3% of gross pay. Your employer contribution is on top of your salary, not taken from it. Use the take-home calculator to see the impact on net pay.
How does ACC affect take-home pay for hourly workers?
All employees in New Zealand pay the ACC earners levy on their wages. For the 2025/2026 year the earners levy rate is $1.67 per $100 of liable earnings, capped at a maximum liable earnings threshold of $142,283. ACC is calculated on gross wages, so it applies to the annual total this calculator produces. It is collected by IRD alongside PAYE.
