How unemployment benefit works in Greece

DYPA (the Greek public employment service, formerly OAED) administers unemployment insurance in Greece. Benefit claims must be submitted within 60 days of dismissal to avoid losing entitlement. The benefit is paid monthly into the beneficiary's bank account for the qualifying duration, subject to continued registration and active job seeking.

Example calculation

An employee dismissed after 2 years of continuous employment has approximately 220 working days in the qualifying period. This gives 12 months of benefit. Monthly benefit = 950 EUR x 55% = 522 EUR. Total benefit over 12 months = 6,267 EUR.

Tips and considerations

Register with DYPA within 60 days of dismissal. The benefit alone (around 522 EUR/month) is well below the Athens cost of living, so maintaining an emergency fund before job loss is critical. Use the benefit period to actively search and retrain; DYPA also offers free training programs.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for unemployment benefit in Greece?
To qualify for Greek unemployment benefit (epidioma anergia) from DYPA, an employee must have been involuntarily dismissed (resignation does not qualify), have at least 12 months of EFKA contributions in the last 14 months before unemployment, be registered as unemployed with DYPA, be actively seeking work, and not be receiving income from other employment, a pension, or other incompatible benefits. Employees who accept voluntary separation packages or resign voluntarily are generally not eligible, though there are specific exceptions for constructive dismissal and harassment cases.
How much is the Greek unemployment benefit in 2025?
The Greek unemployment benefit is set at 55% of the statutory minimum wage (base salary, not including the 14-month convention). With the minimum monthly wage at 950 EUR in 2025, the monthly benefit is approximately 950 x 55% = 522 EUR. The benefit is paid for a maximum of 12 months for those with the maximum qualifying contribution period (at least 200 working days in the last 2 years). Shorter contribution histories lead to shorter benefit periods: 100 to 149 working days qualifies for 5 months of benefit; 150 to 199 days for 8 months; 200 or more days for 12 months.
Is Greek unemployment benefit taxable?
No. Greek unemployment benefit (epidioma anergia) is exempt from income tax. It must be declared in the annual income tax return but does not increase taxable income. The benefit is also not subject to EFKA contributions. However, while receiving unemployment benefit, contribution credits to the main pension fund are maintained at a reduced rate through the DYPA contribution subsidy, so the pension entitlement continues to accrue at a lower level during the benefit period.
Can self-employed individuals receive unemployment benefit in Greece?
Not under the standard DYPA unemployment insurance scheme, which is designed for employed workers covered by EFKA as employees. However, since 2020, a special scheme for self-employed individuals who cease their business activity has been introduced, providing limited transitional support. The eligibility criteria are stricter and the benefit amount lower than the standard employee scheme. Self-employed individuals who become employees before ceasing self-employment may qualify for the standard unemployment benefit based on their employee contribution history. The DYPA website provides detailed eligibility information for each specific situation.
