Frequently asked questions

Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No. A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres while a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres, so a UK gallon is about 20 percent larger. This converter uses the US fluid pint, cup, and fluid ounce alongside both gallon sizes, so pick the gallon that matches your recipe or fuel figure.
How many cups are in a litre?
One litre equals approximately 4.227 US cups, using the legal US cup of 240 millilitres. For rough kitchen purposes you can treat one litre as just over 4 cups. If a recipe uses UK metric cups (250 mL each), one litre is exactly 4 cups.
What is the difference between a fluid ounce and a dry ounce?
A fluid ounce measures volume, while a dry ounce measures weight. They are not interchangeable. One US fluid ounce is 29.5735 mL. A dry ounce is 28.3495 grams and has nothing to do with volume. This converter handles fluid ounces only and does not convert between weight and volume.
How do I convert litres to cubic metres for tank or pool volumes?
One cubic metre is exactly 1,000 litres. A swimming pool that holds 50,000 litres therefore has a volume of 50 cubic metres. You can enter your litre value and select cubic metres as the target unit, or simply divide by 1,000.
