What is a repeating decimal and when does it appear?

A repeating decimal occurs when the denominator of a simplified fraction has a prime factor other than 2 or 5. For example, 1/3 equals 0.333... repeating. This converter shows up to six decimal places, so a repeating sequence will be visible but will not extend to infinity in the display.

How is the simplified fraction calculated?

The converter divides both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For example, 8/12 shares a GCD of 4, so the simplified form is 2/3. If the denominator is negative the sign is moved to the numerator, keeping the denominator positive as is standard convention.

Can I enter negative fractions?
