Frequently asked questions
- How is exact age calculated?
- Age counts the number of whole years from your birthdate to the chosen date, then the leftover whole months, then the remaining days. You only turn a year older once the full calendar year has passed, so someone born on 2 June is still the same age the day before their birthday.
- What happens when someone is born on 29 February?
- Leap-day birthdays are handled by using the last day of February in non-leap years. The calculator uses the actual calendar rules for each year, so the age in years is still correct and the days-to-next-birthday counts to the next available 28 or 29 February depending on the year.
- How do I use this calculator to check if I qualify for a senior discount or age-based benefit?
- Enter your date of birth and set the as-of date to today or the benefit start date. The result shows your exact age in years, months, and days. Many age-based thresholds, such as senior rail cards or pension eligibility, require you to have reached a specific age by a certain date, so the exact year and day count matters.
- Is total days the same as age multiplied by 365?
- Not exactly. Total days counts the actual elapsed calendar days between the two dates, which accounts for leap years. Age in years multiplied by 365 would undercount by roughly one day for every four years of life. For someone aged 40, the true total is around 14,610 days, not 14,600.
